Two papers focus on Leishmania

Among the numerous research activities implemented by EDENext’s sand fly group, major efforts have been made to better understand Leishmania. Recent evidence of this work is now available in two papers, one currently in press in Acta Tropical and the other in Volume 42, Issue 4 of the International Journal of Parasitology (April 2012).

Papers explore interactions between deer, rodents and ticks

The latest issue of the International Journal for Parasitology (April, 2012) contains two papers from EDENext researchers exploring the complex interactions between deer, rodents and ticks, and in particular their consequences on tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), an emerging vector-borne zoonotic disease reported in several European and Asiatic countries.

Interview: ‘auto-dissemination’ for tackling Aedes albopictus

Controlling Aedes albopictus, commonly known as the Asian tiger mosquito, presents particular challenges. An interesting pilot study being conducted in Italy has seen researchers adapt a method which was the subject of experimentation in South America to control Aedes aegypti.

Annual Meeting: Highlights from Turkey

Almost 150 delegates attended EDENext’s first Annual Meeting held in the Turkish city of Izmir. Over the course of a week, which included a day dedicated to presentations from consortium PhD and post-doc students, delegates were brought up to date with the work conducted in the project’s first year and given an insight into the research to be conducted in coming years.

Annual Meeting: Prize-winning presentations

Of nearly 20 presentations given during a day devoted to PhD students and post-Docs, three were selected by the participants for presentation to the Annual Meeting’s opening day plenary session, allowing the audience to vote for the overall winner and a prize worth €1,000. Alongside the top prize, the two runners-up each received a prize worth €500 and a further €500 award was made for the best poster.

Summer course: Beneficial, pest and vector insects

The first inter-university English summer course on ‘Beneficial, pest and vector insects: their physiology, ethology and control’, co-organized by KU Leuven-Arenberg Doctoral School and the Universities of Ghent, Antwerp and Hasselt, takes place in Leuven, Belgium, from June 10 to 15, 2012. A maximum of 54 places are available and the deadline for registrations is May 6.
